Indie Podcast Launches Annual Pulse-Check on AI, Streaming, and the Music Economy
ROSWELL, GA — The music industry is currently navigating a period of profound, often disorienting, transition. To move past the speculative headlines and get to the reality being lived on stages big and small, the independent podcast Curious Goldfish has officially opened its inaugural industry-wide study: “The State of Music in the Age of AI and Streaming.” It is a concerted effort to map the actual, lived experiences of the people creating, curating, and craving the art made today.
“We’re hearing a lot of loud opinions from the top down, but there’s a noticeable silence regarding what’s happening in the home studios and the mid-tier management offices,” says Jason English, the creator and host behind Curious Goldfish. “Between the overnight emergence of generative AI and the shifting goalposts of streaming royalties, it feels like the floor is moving. We wanted to provide a platform to help quantify that shift.”
A Multidimensional Look at the Ecosystem
The survey is designed with a specific, three-pronged framework. Instead of treating "the industry" as a monolith, the study segments participants into three distinct personas:
The Creators: Musicians and producers grappling with new tools.
The Architects: Managers, publicists, and labels trying to build sustainable careers.
The Audience: Fans whose listening habits ultimately bankroll the entire machine.
The survey focuses on four pillars that are, arguably, the most contested territories in modern music: fan engagement, the math behind streaming economics, long-term financial sustainability, and the ethical/creative integration of AI.
It takes roughly seven minutes to complete and participants will be granted early access to a summarized briefing of the findings, with a comprehensive whitepaper slated for release in late 2026.
Why This Data Matters Now
As AI tools permeate songwriting and marketing at a pace that far outstrips our current legal frameworks, the need for a "State of the Union" for independent music has never been more urgent. Is AI a creative co-pilot or a threat to the very idea of human artistry? Are streaming platforms still a viable discovery engine, or have they become a closed loop?
The goal here is to establish a baseline. By turning this into an annual report, Curious Goldfish aims to track these trends over time, providing indie professionals - and really, anyone, who cares - with the kind of data-driven insight usually reserved for major-label boardrooms.
